Courtney Applequist
Courtney Applequist’s highly textural paintings depict atomized reflections of her observed experiences, moments that are simultaneously fractured and whole. Using primarily oil paint & charcoal to exaggerate value and color contrasts, her work depicts a palpable tension between a landscape classically rendered and a splintered mosaic of its individual parts; a tension between the symbolic and the real, the ideal and the passing.
Pulling from her education in architectural design, she uses found geometries of light value & saturated color to move around the surface as she responds to the observed subject, creating a psychological remapping of observation, emotion and memory.
Courtney holds a BFA from Baylor University and currently works and resides in the greater Washington DC area.
