Aphra Adkins

Aphra Adkins is a photographer, painter and installation artist based in Takoma Park, Maryland. Her work focuses primarily on relationships with food, often featuring over-exaggerated colors, textures, or settings.

These photos are part of a series commissioned by the Goethe Institute of DC. The project features the German food writer Britta Gadtke and her family recipes. Gadtke grew up watching her mother cook in the 70's and Adkins created an original kitchen, using materials and props almost entirely original to that era, in which to photograph. The hope is that the same way a familiar taste or smell can transport us, each photo transports the viewer to a specific place in their food memory.
